Are You A Big Dog – Or Just Their Chew Toy?

Internet marketing experts, often referred to as gurus or Big Dogs, are making a fortune online 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Thousands of Internet marketing newbies and those of the mid-levels aspire to be Internet Marketing Big Dogs, but most will never reach that level. I’m sorry to have to say that, but it’s true…

The hardest part to accept, though, is that most of the big dogs started out at the bottom of the Internet marketing heap and rose to the top – some in a matter of months, but most through a few years of intensive activity, labour and investment. Not always upfront investment, but actually re-investing a good chunk of their online profits to fuel more rapid growth.

So if, as Internet marketing Big Dogs, we’re no different than you, what makes the few rise to superstardom online and the bulk continue to be chew toys? There are a myriad of potential reasons, but here are a few of the biggest and most common reasons people fail to do well with Internet marketing…

Being indecisive & failing to ACT NOW – Inside every big dog is a hunting dog, always sniffing the air looking for that first-mover advantage. When any opportunity presents itself, they instantly analyze it – Does it look promising? Will the product or service help my people? Is it a needed or highly desirable item? Can I make money with this? (And yes, that’s the order of importance, too.) If it meets all their criteria, they instantly formulate their marketing strategy, decide which techniques to use to promote it, then choose their tactics and attack!
Not treating their Internet marketing as a professional business – Often people tell me they’ve been trying for years to make it in Internet marketing, buying every shiny new toy that comes along, but never achieving the success these products promise. But when I ask them how much time they spend on it, they tell me a lot – an hour or two almost every day… The reality is, marketers who are truly motivated will spend 4-6 hours a day at it AS WELL AS their doing their current full-time job – and 8-10 hours on the weekends!I know, I can already hear you say ‘but I have other stuff to do, family to spend time with, friends to bowl with or shoot pool with, girls/guys to date, movies to see, etc., etc.’ And that’s fine – only YOU can decide what your priorities are. I’m not discussing what’s right for you – this is about what it takes to build an Internet marketing business and craft your own dream lifestyle with the proceeds. Do I know Big Dogs that only work 3 or 4 hours a day? Sure – but not one who got to the upper echelons that way!
Not being discerning in whose advice they follow - Unless you want your Internet marketing success to take a lot more time, effort and money than it needs to, you have to find, follow and heed the advice from the proper mentor or mentors. Too many newbies, and even some pros, give credibility and Big Dog status to someone just because they’ve had a successful mega-launch or two. They don’t realize that some of today’s ‘Experts’ had the product ghostwritten by someone else and then hired a joint venture broker to get the big dogs to promote the product. I can think of at least two leading ‘affiliate marketing experts’ who got there that way, and I wouldn’t pay a cent for any of their training.Look for those people who have been at the top for a while with a variety of products, great value in their e-zines and on their blogs, and others testifying to how much that person has helped them.
Their are a lot of us who meet those requirements, people like Marlon Sanders, Stephen Pierce, Ken McArthur, Jimmy D. Brown, Jim Daniels and Rosalind Gardner. All of us have been online for 10 or more years, and have been helping others as best we can for most of that time.Trying to follow the advice of too many coaches or mentors is just as deadly as picking the wrong ones. Each of us has their own style, and the track record to prove it works. But each does things differently, and trying to mix more than two or three of these styles will leave you spinning your wheels again. Sure – still read the info in their e-zines and on their blogs – learning has to be constantly ongoing in this biz. But focus your efforts mostly along the paths of the two or three mentors whose style fit you best.
Not focusing on what makes you successful - One thing about Big Dogs – they always keep their eye on the prize. It’s too easy to get all wrapped up in the latest gizmo, site or trend and neglect important ongoing duties. As a general guideline, make sure your time breaks down pretty close to 40% on building your opt-in lists (your long term weapons); 40% on promotional efforts like branding yourself and driving traffic to your squeeze pages, sites, salespages and affiliate links (your short, medium and long term weapons) and 20% for everything else. VERY few people in Internet marketing can claim to stick to those percentages regularly, but I’ve never met one who did and wasn’t constantly building their business and their income.
Not having set goals, or not keeping them in mind at all times - ‘I want to be rich’ is not a goal – it’s a wish. ‘I want to help others’ is not a goal – it’s a mission. ‘I want to retire early with tons of cash’ is not a goal – it’s a dream. To get your wishes, achieve your missions and live your dreams you need to plan out how to get there, and then map out the steps it will take to put you in that position. Those steps are your goals. If your dream is to help people, figure out where you need to be financially, emotionally and intellectually to be truly effective helping others – and decide how many you want to help. What steps will it take to get there?
Do a ‘fuzzy’ 10-year plan to achieve it. Then refine that to a sharper image of where you have to be in 5 years to be on track. So where do you need to be 2 years from now? Set your first round of goals to achieving the results you need a year from now to be right on track for your 2 year, 5 year and 10-year plans. Your one-year program should be positive, distinct steps with concrete goals – exact dollar figures, precise lists of accomplishments, etc. Take those 1-year goals and focus on them til each is completed, then re-examine your plan, make any changes you want to to the long-term targets, and map out year 2. This system has worked for a lot of people in every facet of life, not just for Internet marketing.

As I said at the outset, there can be a myriad of other issues in your own particular case, but these are the most common. If you’re being honest with yourself, you can probably identify right off which of these five examples is true in your own case. So now the question becomes will you do what it takes to get back on track? Put in the focused energy to achieve Internet marketing stardom – or at least enough to fulfill your own personal wishes, missions and dreams? When someone asks you a year or two from now, how will you answer that big question:

Are you a Big Dog – or just their chew toy?

List building is one of the most important aspects of Internet marketing and affiliate marketing success, yet there is little published on it lately since most of the formerly-effective methods of list-building have lost a lot of their ‘oomph’. Internet Marketing Basics – An Introduction To Internet Marketing

Internet marketing, as an industry, is rapidly becoming a major part of many household’s income. While a number of Internet marketing professionals are earning 6, 7 and 8-figure incomes online, society as a whole may well be impacted to a far greater extent by thousands of people using Internet marketing to keep their families out of harm’s way as the economies of the developed countries continue to deteriorate over the next few years.

Most of the press surrounding this new industry focuses on a few success stories of well-heeled ‘Gurus’ or the inevitable cheats who foster SPAM by the boatload, but the truth, and the importance, of Internet marketing is that it can allow everyday people, grasping at straws to try and maintain their lifestyle, to protect their assets and maintain their standard of living during the current downturn.

Far from the perceived ‘Get Rich Quick’ panacea that some purport Internet marketing to be, the truth is that it’s a business, like any other in that it either takes money or time investments to launch, must be nurtured heavily like any newborn, and that there really are NO guarantees as to how any one individual will do, nor even how any one venture will do, even for the most experienced Internet marketers.

There are a few major differences from traditional ‘brick & mortar’ businesses, however. First, and perhaps most importantly, it IS possible to launch a successful Internet marketing business with no major financial investment, provided you already have a computer and an Internet connection. The launch process can be strengthened and the income horizon shortened with deeper pockets, to be sure, but they aren’t the prerequisite in Internet marketing that they are in the offline world. This becomes a major factor for those trying to dig their way out of financial distress, avoid further declines in family finances or achieve a better-funded lifestyle for their families.

The second major difference is the amount of valuable information on starting and running an Internet business that is available for free online. A search at Google for ‘making money online’, ‘Internet marketing’ or ‘Affiliate marketing’ will return about an equal amount of resources that are for sale and that are available for free. Almost every Internet marketer, operating in any niche you can name, offers a free newsletter or ‘e-zine’ that dispenses a great deal of free information as well. Try to imagine an automobile manufacturer or pharmaceutical company sending you regular information on how to compete with them, how to recreate their products, etc.!

Still Waiting To Be Impressed at W.I.S.

Well, after two days at the World Internet Summit we’re
still waiting to be impressed – maybe we’ve been spoiled
by how great Ken McArthur’s JVAlert Live seminars are…

Holding out hope for today, though – As a videographer
I’m curious to see what Mike Stewart has to say. He did
some great stuff with Jim Edwards a while back, and Jim
and Willie Crawford were the only ones with IM videos at
YouTube before my first one, so let’s see what wisdom he
imparts…

Also today is Dr. Mike Woo-Ming, whom I’ve seen some
spectacular things from – in fact I have his ‘Marketers
on a Mission’ disk here on my desk. So hope remains…

PLR Success – The 4 PLR Success Steps Revealed!

When it comes to selling new PLR products (Products that come with Private Label Rights), for most Internet marketers the first names that pop into their minds are those of the three PLR Masters – Doug Champigny, Aurelius Tjin and Edmund Loh. One reason is that all 3 of us release new first-quality PLR products on a regular basis. More importantly though, we know the four steps to PLR success online. The four steps I’m about to reveal to you will always help to ensure successful PLR sales events. Follow these Four PLR Success Steps and you’ll soon have a loyal following for your private label rights sales events too!

PLR Success Step One: Always Offer 1st-Quality PLR Products!

First, make sure your PLR products are first rate – no one wants old or poor-quality products, even in a PLR package they’re going to rewrite anyway. The better the inital quality, the better the final result once people convert PLR to original products to make money online.

PLR Success Step Two: Time Your PLR Sale In ADVANCE of the big selling season!

Second, if the PLR products are of a time-sentive nature, such as Christmas, Valentine’s, Easter, Summer Activities, etc., make sure your PLR sales event starts at least 6 weeks earlier than that season begins. For example, the Merry Christmas PLR bundle came out in time for people to spend 2 or 3 weeks converting the 4 great PLR products, the PLR graphics, the salespages and the download pages and still get all four products, and the bonus e-book with Master Resell Rights, on to their own sites before the Christmas frenzy starts around the middle to end of November.

Remember, the general Internet population is your customers’ target market - not yours. Your target market for PLR products is the marketers who will modify the PLR into their own version and put it online, so you have to get the materials into their hands in plenty of time for them to be ready for THEIR big season.

PLR Success Step Three: Offer PLR Products That Won’t Go Out Of Style!

Thirdly, when targeting a niche market with niche plr products, go for products that can be reused year after year. Unlike Internet marketing PLR or affiliate marketing PLR, niche materials don’t necessarily go out of fashion if you choose your niche targets cleverly.

An e-book about the best Christmas gifts for 2008, or about new technological gadgets for Christmas has a one-season lifespan. Not good, really… Yet look again at the Champigny Christmas PLR Pack – 250 Christmas Recipes, Christmas Crafts, An Old Fashion Christmas and the History Of An American Christmas – all four are subjects that will still appeal 5, ten or 20 YEARS down the road – meaning with a bit of work now, smart PLR marketers will be able to make money online with these products for years to come! The bonus e-book, even though it comes with Master Resell Rights instead of private label rights, is another prime example – a Christmas Fun Guide is another that won’t get outdated quickly!

PLR Success Step Four: Pricing Your PLR Products Intelligently!

And fourthly, use intelligent PLR pricing strategies. Don’t under-price your PLR – it’s easy to forget sometimes that selling private label rights to digital downloads is the most valuable form of products to sell to Internet marketers. They get to make it their own product under their own name, without having to do all the research or pay the exorbitant fees most outsourcing incurs.

On the other hand, don’t overprice it either – not every marketer is going to like every product in the package if there’s more than one resource bundled together – and not every PLR product is going to fit their niche or their site’s specialization. As a general rule of thumb, price your bundle so your customer is in a profit situation after selling 3 copies of any one product in the bundle. Since most e-books go for around $27, keep your bundle to around $50 or less unless it’s a huge bundle. The Champigny Christmas PLR Pack is about as big as I’d suggest you go for less than $50, though – any bigger and I’d suggest you go in the $79 – $97 range. Keep it under $100 unless you’re adding PLR videos and/or PLR audios to the mix as well.

21 Internet Marketing Success Steps

Like others in the upper echelons of Internet marketing and affiliate marketing, I’m asked one question by Internet marketing and affiliate marketing ‘newbies’ more often than any other:

“I can’t seem to make money online – What am I doing wrong?”

When my Internet marketing mentoring students ask me that, I can give them a detailed breakdown specific to their online operations – but they’re paying top dollars for my time investment, and I only mentor those who already have a viable presence online. So what about those new to Internet marketing – what advice can we offer them?

Time constraints prevent anyone from checking into the current operations of everyone starting out in Internet marketing, and after 11 years of being online full time it’s easy to forget how frustrating even the simplest of Internet marketing activities can be to the neophyte.

So in response I put together this list of ‘21 Internet Marketing Success Steps‘ to try and help guide both those new to Internet marketing and those with some Internet marketing experience who find their online marketing profits stalled or declining.

Pretty much ALL Internet Marketing success breaks down very similar to:

Basic Internet Marketing:

1) Choose affiliate or your own products;
2) Build some type of web presence for it;
3) Get targeted eyeballs to that page or blog post;
4) Start building your list from those targeted visitors;
5) Use every free method to bring more people to the site;
6) Use your list to bring people back to the site and to new sites;

Intermediate Internet Marketing:

7) Add related backend offers to your site;
Set up an affiliate program and get others pushing your site;
9) Put about 30% of what’s coming in back into getting more visitors;
10) Participate in giveaways to build your list and visitor numbers;
11) Find related products for new sites and do 1 – 10 with them too;
12) Attend live IM events, for knowledge but mostly for networking;
13) Convert related PLR resources to unique products to put online;

Advanced Internet Marketing:

14) Set up a backend linking all your sites together & automate the processes;
15) Build e-mail e-courses to make available in each niche/area you cover;
16) Outsource much of your visitor acquisition;
17) Do Joint Ventures with other advanced Internet Marketers;
18) Outsource your product creation;
19) Evaluate and improve your automated backend efforts;
20) Speak at industry events & seminars;
21) Give back – mentor others to help them achieve their dreams.

For most people starting out it’s safe to assume the following as averages other Internet marketing newbies have achieved…

First sale: 2 – 6 months.
First steady trickle of sales: 4 – 12 months.
Full Time Earnings: 2 – 5 years.

Those Internet marketing timelines can be influenced up or down by the amount of time and money you can put in, your background experience, your focus, and mostly by the amount of concentrated, continual effort you put into following your plan in a tightly-focused manner.

The 3 Biggest Biz-Killers…

1) Lack of focus (too many different, unrelated activities).
2) Giving up too soon (lack of perseverance).
3) Half-hearted effort (It takes a lot of time and/or a lot of money – you have to be willing to invest one or the other (or both) on a constant basis for the first few years at least. Everyone I’ve met at our level or above has a passionate commitment to their Internet marketing business.)

Do an honest appraisal of your Internet marketing efforts to date. Are you following the above steps in order, or jumping around? Starting at #1, how far into the list can you go, confident you’re performing that task diligently? Re-evaluate your plans based on what that tells you, and use that current limitation as the guide to what you need to learn more about, to focus on more, to put more effort into – and to eliminate anything else you’re doing that is straining your focus and your money and time constraints.

Decide what your goals are online. A few extra bucks? A steady inflow to help with the mortgage or to get a new car or a cottage? Enough to do this full time? Or sustaining a level that lets you achieve all your dreams and desires? Each level is being achieved right now by people online – just know which you’re after so you can gauge the amount of time and effort you have to commit to your desired level of Internet marketing success.

Don’t be swayed by stories of meteorical rises online – while they do happen, they’re extremely rare. Usually they don’t make all the details public – I know a lot of ‘overnight successes’ who spent 3-5 or more years in the trenches first – just no one knows that. And others who put 6 or 7 figures into their Internet marketing businesses before you first heard of them.

And watch out for people who had one or two big launches 3, 5 or 10 years ago and are still teaching that same system – Internet marketing practices changes too quickly and too drastically for that info to still be accurate. When evaluating advice you get in this biz, always think to yourself:

“Yes, but what have they done lately?”

If the answer is ‘nothing new in the last 6 months’, take the advice with a grain of salt and stay focused on your own path, only using the bits from it that fit in with your own Internet marketing strategy. After all, only YOU know where YOUR biz is right now, and what YOUR end goals are, right?

The best advice I’ve seen in this biz is to focus on making your first buck. Not a lot, just your first buck. Achieving that shows it can be done. Then focus on making one more. That shows it wasn’t a fluke – it can be repeated over and over successfully. That eliminates one of the biggest stumbling blocks to building your own Internet marketing business by showing that a) it can be done, and b) YOU can do it. Then just use the 21 Internet Marketing Success Steps above to build your business by continually repeating that process in larger volume for larger returns, and you’re on your way!
